I read this as part of a challenge, expecting to dislike it because I don't much care for Westerns and expected McCormac to be too dark for my tastes. Instead I was entranced with the trek taken by John Grady Cole and Lacy Rawlins as they searched for a place in Mexico where they could live the only life they wanted forever, as cowboys surrounded by horses and land. The quest for their dreams leads them to experiences both wonderful and terrifying, and McCormac allows you to live right along with them. McCormac writes like a poet. In the end, I fell in love with his beautiful writing and the incomparable John Grade Cole.
