Early on in "King Charles III", there is a scene where the title character rebukes his prime minister for daring to imagine that he understood the relationship between the new monarch and his late ex-wife. The film seems, uncomfortably, to cross that line, as well, presuming to know the inner lives of the real royal family, although this is lessened slightly by the fact that the actors do not particularly resemble their real-life counterparts and make virtually no effort at imitating their mannerisms. With that put aside, despite a few rough patches (mostly involving Harry's subplot), the film succeeds as a remarkably thoughtful - and appropriately ambiguous - tragedy of monarchy, power, arrogance, authority, tradition, and modernity.
