I confess I’m an unabashed fan of PI Cormoran Strike. With CAREER OF EVIL author Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling) has once again written a smart, intricate plot - this time involving a grisly serial killer who not only threatens the community at large and Strike’s business but poses an immediate danger to Strike’s assistant and partner, Robin Ellacott. During the investigation Strike encounters multiple suspects, shadowy figures from his past. Just as in the series’ previous books (THE CUCKOO’S CALLING and THE SILKWORM), the crime takes a backseat to the characters - specifically Cormoran and Robin whose witty banter and sharp repartee remind me of Nick and Nora Charles from the classic novel and film series, The Thin Man. Attention fans of fast-paced action storylines: these novels are NOT for you. As a reader of the Strike series, I’ve come to revel in the slow but tense unraveling of the mysteries and also to care about Strike and Robin and about how their personal and professional relationships have evolved over time. I would definitely advise reading this series in order. CAREER OF EVIL concludes with a final twist and a cliffhanger ending which left me wondering where the author will take Robin and Strike next - hopefully I won’t have to wait long to find out!
