Bowen is one of my favorite authors. Her characters seem real, and the plot proceeds logically. Joanne Kilbourn and two of her children are invited to stay at a cottage for the summer, and she talks with a guilty young man who commits suicide that evening. The whole community is upset, and it becomes clear that the missing female lawyer is key to the mystery.
