In the end, I was disappointed in the series. Scott brings together a lot of fantasy tropes: but he doesn't manage to make the characters fit into a consistent world. The reveals about the Twins' parentage, several times, kept making me say "Oh come on -- that's the author manipulating the world again!" Scott writes well. mostly (though he does fall into "see how much I know about myth and general fantasy, and how I'm fitting that into my story: I'm really clever, see!" at least 3 times per book) -- and in the end, he doesn't make the story hold together fully. I did finish it. It's not bad. But please, go read A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA or Diane Duane's first few Young Wizards stories, and then think about whether this works anywhere near as well.
