After reading some of the remarks about this film, I was expecting a real stinker of a film, however it is an action-packed suspense movie about a kidnapped contractor in the midst of South American civil war and the attempt to arrange a ransom recovery. It comes complete with the inherent corruption of politics, violence, and an underlying romance drama. It's worth a watch.

I used to think Meg Ryan's career tanked because of the affair she had with Russell Crowe during / after making this film. Now I think it's because of her performance. She is terrible in this. It really shows her weakness in drama. Maybe rom-coms were all she could do.

And the script is bad. Her husband has been kidnapped and she's making a salad. Really? You'd have the wherewithal to make a salad when your loved one had been kidnapped? On the other hand, Russell Crowe is a good actor and triumphs over the poor script. So does David Morse as the kidnapped husband.

Director Taylor Hackford's commentary is more interesting than the film.

Maybe a bit too predictable, but still an okay movie. Russell Crowe is always nice to look at.

Great Ecuadorian setting.
