This monumental work by Gibbons defined modern historical writing as we know it. It is very erudite and dense in information. Gibbons writes from the late 1700's and it shows. Imagine reading a complex history in the style of the Declaration of Independence.
This book is not for everyone, but if you have the time and patience, you will be richly rewarded. This book took me a very long time to read because I had to pause and re-read many passages over and over again to get the full meaning of each comment. However, Gibbons does have a very dry sense of humor that made me laugh out loud on several occasions! Truly, this man uses English to it's fullest extend and it is sad to see how much the language has degenerated.
