The beautiful Natalya is married to Arkadi, a rich but older landowner. Bored with her life, she catches the eye of the handsome Mikhail. Might this flirtation develop into something more? Not once the young, attractive Aleksei arrives as tutor to Natalya's son. Natalya falls for Aleksei, but so does her teenage step-daughter Vera. Suddenly Natalia's seemingly idyllic life has turned into a complex web of unrequited love, guilt, lust and jealousy.

VERY slow. VERY Russian. At least you will have enough time to read the subtitles.

Turgenev wrote this gentle domestic drama as a play, so translation to film is not easy. It is not aided by the actor playing the handsome young tutor, a personage with whom - one would think - no mature woman could possibly 'fall in love' (and given that this was a pre-toyboy era, no other explanation for Natalia's infatuation is available). The nuances of the dialogue and the mutual misunderstandings are the best part of this essentially static movie (which some slow-mo antics in the golden waving wheat, etc. do not relieve). A film for a quiet evening.

For this film, Ralph Fiennes studied the Russian language, as this film is largely in Russian with some conversations in German (no English). It is an adaptation of a 1850's play by Ivan Turgenev ("A Month in the Country." The subject seems to be about love. Unrequited love, unspoken love if it is forbidden, love across age differences, etc. Humor comes in when the audience knows that the characters have wrong ideas about who loves whom. I probably liked this film more than the critics. It received an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Action fans should look elsewhere for their entertainment.
