Add a CommentRated 6/10. Initially, this was a rather average movie, but it was the ending that bumped my rating up to a 6. Nice twist!
This could have been much better though if the moral dilemma of the body transferring bit had been properly addressed. Instead, the script writer decided it was better to go "full Arnie" on this one towards the end.
Surprisingly good; even with Ben Kingsley is no guarantee of a good product (see the awful TV mini series Tut--or, rather, please ignore it.), and Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds isn't quite Ryan Gosling. The theme here (extended life and the price paid to achieve it) isn't new, either. However...
What IS new iare two twists on the ol' "deal with the devil" theme--what if the extended lifetime process takes longer than expected to actually work? Another twist: what if the "devil" (In this case, a shyster doctor and his thuggish hitmen) take new-body short-cuts? Yikes!
So, those two twists, some decent performances--and a good one by Natalie Martinez--and mostly-convincing action sequences make for a three-star thriller.
Reynolds is pretty good here--(2015 was a great year for him, see him in the excellent Woman in Gold with Helen Mirren), Ben Kingsley does as much as he can during his brief screen time, and there's Matthew Goode (who? Oh, right: the race-car driver who marries Mary in the last episode of Downton Abbey.) as the shyster doctor who, along with his just desserts, gets a little short-changed here by script-writer and director. What could have been...

Great cast, Great effects, Great acting and Great plot. Can I ask for anything else?!
Action/SciFi/Thriller. What haven't we seen in this genre? In the case of SELF/LESS, nothing. The evil scientist. The pining female companion. The adorable little girl. It's all color by numbers. But Ryan Reynolds is a bankable star. He's proven that by now. And Ben Kingsley is Ben Kingsley. Always engaging. The problem here, among many, is the consciousness swapping narrative hook is portrayed in such a way as to be about as convincing as Ed Wood's PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.
This was a very intriguing movie. Warning: contains language, taking of Our LORD's name in vain and Brief strong sexual content. In this one, the truth wins!
Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsly were great. Overall this is a more or less mediocre movie. Worth a watch if you have the time to kill and you don't have to pay for it.

Excellent thriller that is clever and engaging. This is one of the few movies that I would have paid to see in a theatre and not felt ripped off upon leaving.
Excellent film. Ben Kingsley is only in it for a short while but is powerful as always. Ryan Reynolds does a really good job carrying the storyline. NOT filled with action but rather makes you think. Somewhat predictable, yes, but still thoroughly watchable.
