The tale of Sam and Maya, two star-crossed lovers fighting for workers' rights, is idealistic and one-dimensional at times. But late in the movie, there's a scene in which Maya's older sister, Rosa, tells of her sacrifices when she came to the US. It's unforgettably powerful and heart-rending, the real message of this film and not to be missed.

Bread is for the necessities of life and roses are the little extras that make you more than alive. This must be the best union organizing movie of the 21st century. That is not really saying much as union organizing movies are as rare as compassionate conservatives. It is amazing that somebody (director Ken Loach) would have to come from Britain to make a movie that depicts just ordinary working folks in America.

Started out so violently that I shut it off after about 4 minutes.
